Real Status and Perceived Burdens about Elderly Supports by The Middle Aged

Abstract
Background : Social concerns about elderly supports have been increasing with rapid progress of aging. To propose the data for developing the efficient welfare policy for the aged through observation about the real status and burdens about elderly supports perceived by the middle aged who play the major role.

Method : Subjects were the 40~50 aged parents of the students candidated from a university of Busan city. Questionnaire survey about the cognitions, real status, perceived burdens for the elderly attendance was done during 4 weeks from October 2003. Data analysis is operated with frequency, chi-square test, t-test using SPSS program (ver 10.0K).

Result : In cognitions, family centered tendency was still strong and, they hoped the paralleled children and nation¡¯s charge for the support. They wanted to live separately when the aged healthy. In the status of real supports, the first son had major role. Most of actual supporter were women, 62% of them had been supporting over 2 years, 53% of them charged over 200 thousand won for the supports. The mean level of burdens by Zarit index (0~4) was the highest in concerns to better support (2.0) and in concerns to do more (1.9). The actual needs for help to elderly supports were economic aids (33%), education and counselling about methods of real support (27%), opportunities free from the supports (16%), in order.

Conclusions : To decrease the burden of supporters and to improve the quality of life of the aged, the strengthened polices mostly considering the aspects of time and cost would be recommended.
